9 Steps to Making Your Own Wooden Desk Organizer

There are times when you enter your home and you find letter, files and envelopes strewn across your table because you cannot seem to find one place to keep them all. You can chalk it up to simply being lazy, but like many things life, there is a solution to this problem too - build a desk organiser. Of course, you can always buy one from online stores like Woodsala. They even have an entire collection for you to check out. But if you wish to make one yourself, you can do that too.

Making a wooden desk organizer is easier than you think. At least one that is minimal yet modern. You can make one even if you have no woodworking experience. All you have to do is follow the steps given below and get ready to have your desk all tidy and neat. Still think that it is easier said than done? Just read on.

Here is What You Need

  • Pieces of Wood (You can get pine wood)
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Sand paper
  • Hand saw
  • Paint
  • Painter's tape
  • Wood glue

Step 1

Making a wooden desk organizer

Measure the wood that you have bought and mark out all the pieces before you begin making your own wooden desk organizer. You can use a pencil and a ruler to do that. Follow this by cutting them with a hand saw. You will have to cut them into eight pieces - the sides, base, back and pencil divider. Take a look at the image above to get a better idea.

You can always have your own set of measurements, depending on what desk organizer ideas you have for your table. If you do not, then you can simply follow this guide.

PIECE A:  the pencil holder side should be 3 inches in width x 3.5 inches in height

PIECE B: the pencil holder side should be 3 inches in width x 3.5 inches in height

PIECE C: the pencil holder front should be 3.5 inches in width x 3.5 inches in height

PIECE D: base of the desk organizer should be 13 inches in width x 3.5 inches in height

PIECE E: back of the desk organizer should be 13 inches in width x 3.5 inches in height

PIECE F: central divider should be 9.5 inches in width x 2.5 inches in height

PIECE G: front of desk organizer should be 9.5 inches in width x 1.5 inches in height

PIECE H: the desk organizer side should be 3.5 inches in width x 3.75 inches in height

Step 2

After you have cut these pieces, rub the edges with the sand paper.

Step 3

First, assemble pieces A, B and C to make the pencil holder as part of the wooden table organizer. Glue A and B on either sides of Piece C to make a 'U' shape.

Step 4

To the bottom of this to-be pencil holder apply glue and fix it onto one corner of piece D. Make sure that the pencil holder's front aligns with piece D's front edge.

Step 5

Now use piece E, which will be the back of the desk organiser and apply some glue to the bottom edge of it. Stick it on piece D in such a way that it also covers the back of the pencil holder.

Step 6

Get piece F out and add some glue to one of its long edges. Stick it on the centre of piece D. Piece F acts as a central divider to your wooden desk organizer.

Step 7

Similarly, fix the G piece on the front of the desk organiser. This means the front will be in the same line as the front of the pencil holder.

Step 8

As the final step (well almost), affix piece H to the only open side of the organiser. So, if you have affixed the pencil holder on the right side of piece D, then piece H should be placed on the left-end.

Step 9

Stick the painter's tape before you paint it and choose a colour of your choice. Once you are done painting, let it dry and only after that remove the painter's tape.

And voila, your personal desk organiser is ready! Let’s get to cleaning up that desktop now.
